“Our water is getting saltier and saltier. Especially in the last 70 years when we've really increased the use of salt on streets, parking lots and sidewalks," said Allison Madison, Wisconsin Salt Wise Program Manager.

Salt not only changes our water, but also its inhabitants.

"A freshwater fish cannot survive in salt water," Haydin said. “Ultimately, our fisheries are smaller, we have fewer fish, and the fish themselves aren't getting as big. We learn that from current studies.”

Fish aren't the only creatures that sense sodium.

"If you're on a low-salt diet, you could accidentally be drinking salt and getting it into your diet in ways you didn't intend," Haydin said.

What is the right amount of salt? Wisconsin Salt Wise recommends using a salt-filled coffee mug for a 20-foot driveway, or 10 squares of driveway.

The 'less is more' approach to salt is something local communities have started to try to reduce salt production.

"We're looking at 10, 15 year averages, we used to assume more salt and a lot more salt consumption," said Jeffery Smith, area manager for Milwaukee Sanitation. "Obviously, over time, we've found that you can reduce that amount and still maintain public safety."
